The Professional Times

Excellence in Every Word

Pt. Somesh Mathur – Devoted His Life to the Discovery of New Vistas in the Field of Music

An explorer by nature, he has experimented with different genres, creating a few moments of magic in his quest to enlarge the boundaries of conventional music.

A scholar at heart, Somesh combines the discipline of a classical singer with the thorough professionalism of an M.B.A. graduate. His creativity and panache stem from the environment in which this child prodigy has been brought up.

His illustrious father, Pandit Sarvesh Chandra Mathur is an exponent of the Agra Gharana. His talented mother, Smt. Sudha Mathur is a Violin maestro, being one of the foremost disciples of one of the greatest doyens of Indian Classical Music – PANDIT V.G. JOG. Their encouragement saw a 4-year-old Somesh give a virtuoso performance of a Chota Khayaal {a classical rendition} in Raga Durga.

To further hone his talent, Somesh graduated as a Sangeet Visharad [equivalent to a graduation degree in Hindustani Classical Music – Vocal] from the famous Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya along with an M.B.A. to gain the academic rigour that is instilled in many of his compositions. His first ever professional concert at the famous Sangeet Research Academy [Calcutta] charmed an elite and discerning audience including stalwarts of Indian Classical Music like; the late Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan; the late Pandit V.G.Jog; the late Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan; the late Pandit Nivritbua Sarnaik; the late Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh; the late Ustad Vilayat Khan; Ustad Rashid Khan; Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty; amongst a host of several other accomplished artistes & gurus.

From then on, Somesh has never looked back and has won a number of accolades acknowledging his thirst to uncover new streams of music. Somesh experiments with a variety of genres ranging from Indian Classical to Classic Rock; and everything in between, like, Jazz; Soul; Blues; R & B; Hip-Hop; Western Classical; Thumri; Qawaali; Bhajan; Keertan; Sufi and Ghazals.

Somesh reveals, that his secret ambition and desire is to be a vocalist and a songwriter/producer for PINK FLOYD! With his proficiency in Tabla, Harmonium, Keyboards, Guitar, and Drums, Somesh Mathur contributes a lot more to the world of music, than just his voice, as is evident on all his albums.

His first-ever album, EK NAYI BAAT {CBS – SONY / BMG – 1988} was a progressive and trend-setting Ghazal album.
LIVE IN EUROPE {SOM INC./PANDIT RECORDS} followed in 1991-92. The singer-composer started work on his groundbreaking album, _ACHCHA HAI (1994), which was launched with much fanfare in 1996.

A prominent milestone in Somesh’s career was when he recorded for and performed at the Grand Finale {sharing the stage with Jon Bon Jovi; Sting; Spice Girls; No Doubt; Deff Leppard; Etc..} of the Channel [V] Awards – 1997, from the historic album/song, REASON TO SMILE {Wajah Muskurane Ki, MAGNASOUND; 1997}, as a part of the celebrations for India’s 50th year of Independence.
